March 30th, 2008 | 14 Comments | Posted in SEO

Internet Marketing Toronto AKA Christopher Kata It’s not a major announcement, but it’s interesting. Google has released into Webmaster Tools a free Robots.txt generator.

With all of the developers that Microsoft has, why can’t they simply sit back and write all of the cool tools we webmasters wish we had? Google beat them to the punch again with this simple but convenient tool for generating your robots.txt files.

robots

It’s an important file and getting it wrong can mean losing all of your rankings. Creating it within Google Webmaster tools at least ensures that Google can read your robots.txt - just be sure not to Disallow all spiders :)

It’s official. Social Networking has now gone mobile! With proliferation of 3G phones around the world accessing the Internet at hi speeds coupled with the increasing rate of users around the world experiencing the Internet for the first time through a phone it comes as no surprise that social networking sites have embraced the technology and gone mobile themselves. Using Negative Keywords For Search Engine Optimization

March 27th, 2008 | 8 Comments | Posted in SEO

Internet Marketing Toronto AKA Christopher Kata What if the big three searche engines allowed the use of negative keywords for a sites organic search rankings?

Adam Green and I were chatting the other day and he dropped this interesting question on me. What if the big three search engines allowed a webmaster through webmaster tools to specify a set of negative keywords for which the site should not rank for. From a quality and lead generation perspective SEO and PPC are quite similar in that as SEO’s we want to get qualified traffic to our sites - so why not allow us to filter out keywords which we know are bouncing or producing poor results?

For example - site A ranks well for “self storage” and as a result gets traffic for terms such as “self storage backup” or “rv storage” both of which are low quality traffic keywords for site A. Why not specify”-backup” and “-rv” into a list of negative keywords in webmaster tools?

Can anyone see why this would be a bad idea for webmasters, the search engines or the users of search engines? I think it improves the overall quality of the search experience for everyone involved.

Perhaps this has been discussed before, but I’ve not come across it in the context of organic results. Please comment - I am interested in what everyone has to say about it.

Pay per Click vs. Search Engine Optimization

March 26th, 2008 | 8 Comments | Posted in Business Development

Stephanie AbouatallahThe Showdown: Should your company do Pay per Click (PPC) or Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ?

A common question that I get asked regularly by potential customers is “Should I sign on to do Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or Pay per Click (PPC)? While every company’s situation is unique, there are some general points to remember.

SEO has been described as a popularity contest where the search engines spend time reviewing each website to identify which ones are most relevant to a user’s search. There are many factors that help the search engines identify a websites’ popularity. To learn more about these different elements look back at our older blog posts. As most of you know from being in high school…you don’t get popular overnight. In fact, it can sometimes take a few months for people to know your name. That is exactly how the search engines work. They take their time to identify you as being popular. Sometimes they might consider your popularity and change their mind. The key thing to remember is that this is a long term strategy. When you sign up to do SEO you are signing up to give your company credibility and presence; this isn’t achievable overnight. However, once credibility is established, the rewards are amazing and your business will $ee tremendous value from it.

PPC is also considered search engine marketing but it is very different than SEO and many different rules apply. PPC is a paid program that allows an ad campaign to be built for the search engine results on specific key phrases of your choice. These ads appear on the right/top of the search engine results page. This type of campaign receives less attention from users than SEO; however, it can easily be changed and manipulated to suit a companies needs. The ability to geographically target your ads, turn your campaign off/on when needed. Use the ad to qualify potential visitors and direct visitors to a page of your choice. PPC is a proven method for generating qualified traffic and leads.

Which one do you choose?

Well, in most cases, we would recommend both. The main reason we would recommend both to you is quite straight forward. With any business, you want the most visual presence possible. Well, if you are on the first page of the search engines through SEO AND PPC…your company appears twice. Two times the chances of getting a lead and sale!

Going a little bit deeper, by participating in both PPC and SEO you are expanding your overall reach and giving your company a strong online presence. PPC might focus on a variety of key phrases that represent the peripheral key phrases related to your business’ products/services whereas SEO might touch on your core business and your general industry. There are many strategies like this and my advice to you would be to consult with an internet marketing professional who can analyze your business for specific information on your company needs.

There is more that could be said about this topic so if you have a specific question, please feel free to ask. Likewise, feel free to add your wisdom.

New Backlink Checking Tool

March 24th, 2008 | 15 Comments | Posted in Cool Tools

Internet Marketing Toronto AKA Christopher Kata Web Design Elixirs has released a new backlink checking too. I’ve tried it out and while the report needs a little polishing it appears to work fairly well.

The report queries Yahoo! for the backlinks and is able to report data on 3000 links while Yahoo! only reports data on the first 1000. The report provides you with:

  • Domain Page
  • Inbound link URL
  • Anchor Text
  • NoFollow status
  • Redirect status
  • Page Title
  • Heading
  • Total Links
  • IP Address

I suggested they add the following to make the report a little friendlier:

  • Domain being checked & PR
  • Total Links
  • Total Links Reported On
  • Report Date
  • Download to TSV option

Give the backlink report tool a test drive. Let us know what you think by posting a comment here!

Stephanie Abouatallah The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success.

After reading Bob Burg and John David Mann’s book The Go-Giver: A Little Story about a powerful business idea there are some important points to share. These “laws” can be used in business and in your personal life. I truly believe that these laws uphold important messages that everyone should look at regularly and identify how they correlate to their own lives. If you have read the book I would love to hear your review.

The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success

  1. The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.
  2. The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.
  3. The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.
  4. The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
  5. The Law of Receptivity: The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.
