The Importance Of Experimentation
As children we love to try new things. I know, I have a five year old at home and he has without a doubt the best ideas for things to do around the house. Unfortunately our education system is setup in such a way that overtime discourages us to try new things. Instead we’re taught to conform an follow direction.
In this new era of information technology and the creative economy, a business cannot afford to have a group of employees who don’t know how to think, develop ideas and test them out. How else can a company grow and expand if it cannot be creative and experiment with things to see what works and does not?
These same principles are applicable to Internet marketing. The pace at which the Internet and services running on the Internet demands that we be creative and experiment with ideas at much more rapid pace. For example, Facebook is now offering paid advertising on it’s site. If you’re target market matches the demographic profile of Facebook users this may just be a tremendous source of leads for you. Unless you test it out, how will you know? The options available to a business change every week and you need to be out there find and testing these them out. By doing so, you’ll be guaranteed to find sources of good traffic and leads for your business.
In addition you’ll develope awareness of your site, increase your back links count, and untimately improve your natural search engine rankings which will lead to increased “free traffic”. So why delay? There is virtually nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I agree, testing out new things is the only way to go. All the best things have arisen out of trial and error.

and yet many companies do nothing different year after year (forget month after month)!
I find it simply amazing.

Ckata,
Nice post. Perhaps a review of the pros and cons would be good also. I heard about Facebook but for some reason, never really looked into it. Its so popular that it reportedly makes over a million dollars a week. Some Harvard kid invented this concept that started as a social networking thing for college kids and is now so popular like Myspace.

Definitely right! Sometimes, you don’t have to take the risk.. What you have learned is useless if you don’t try and test if it works well for you.. :D

right on man. Like the facebook thing, part of it is luck. The more things you test out the better chance of getting lucky. The biggest money makers online are the ones that have original ideas.

Experimentation is where the little guy can be the big boys hands down. I enjoy major rankings for many great niche keywords ( not for the Geek Mother site yet as I only just bought it - I liked the name!) and this has given me a good living online. So affiliating with some of the big boys and basically rehashing all of that lovely content that they provide free through datafeeds means that you can creat something unique and with added value in a short space of time. Howver, you still have to work for your money unless of course you can sucker people into a get rich quick pyramid.

Experimentation is really the backbone of learning while applying the things learned in search engine optimization in order to get some hints and techniques as well to drive traffic for a site…

I am new to internet marketing but I am quickly learning that experimenting and learning through mistakes is one of the most helpful experiences you can have. I have heard of Face Book and Social Networking but have not had time to get involved with it yet. I will for sure look into Face Book now with the paid advertising feature.

There is no way you can be successful at seo/sem if you are not willing to experiment and take some chances. I have several sites I run for myself to test out things on so that I am not using clients sites for this. That way I can go straight to what works for them.

Hey Tracy,
You’re absolutely right. It applies to SEO/SEM as much as it does to business development in general!

Internet is so wide. There’s no point in building a site or blog if you do not learn new things or afraid to experiment with it. If you are into business then idea and creativity is a must! you can’t just laid back and wait for the profits..you have to earn it.

Like Jacl I have never looked into facebook or myspace for that matter. I just always thought of those social networking sites as “teen centred” but in the interest of being open minded and adding to my creativity, I just might take a look.

Hey, just so you know your layout looks a bit funky in my browser - the right column is up top and the left column starts below where the right colum ends…

Yeah its a bug in IE. Firefox is fine but IE is giving us a hard time.
We’ve tried cleaning it up, but with out luck. So instead we’re working on launching a new theme in the next several weeks.

For success in life everyone needs to experiment. If we dont experiment we can not discover new things,
I always try for new thing.

i agree, testing and experimenting is the essence of internet marketing. Although you may have 1000 failed attempts, as long as you learn something from each attempt, you are building for the successes, and it usually comes with great perseverance.

Well put!

totally agree. Experimentation is also applicable to internet marketing, not just in education, economics, etcetera..
