Google Completes Acquisition of DoubleClick

posted by Christopher on March 11, 2008

{{chris}} Google has completed the acquisition of DoubleClick!

It’s official. It’s finally done. Google now owns DoubleClick! With that let’s just hope they don’t suddenly turn evil and use all of our personal data they now have from DoubleClick against us!

If you have an opinion on this please chime in. I’d love to hear it. Personall, I think it’s a bad idea for advertisers. What do you think?

I’m actually adding a bit more to this post as this just occurred to me. Since Google now owns DoubleClick and DoubleClick is tracking all user behaviour through PayPal – does that not give Google Checkout an unfair advantage over PayPal? Perhaps PayPal will stop using DoubleClick now – but the historical data is now in Googles hands!

What do you think about that?

This kind of stuff makes me see red!
I’m spluttering so much that all I can get out is that I detest any kind of monopoly!!

    Ckata,

The red high light is hard to read. I had to get real close to the screen to read, “Google now owns DoubleClick.”

Yes, for $3.1 billion dollars, Google has filled a void that it was missing — a powerful advertising business for banners, videos, and other display ads. This broadens Google’s advertising reach.

DoubleClick has connection with every major online publisher and more than half of the online ad agencies including, Time Warner’s Sports Illustrated, Friendster, Viacom’s (VIA.B) MTV Networks among its customers.

What does that mean for Google users? More advertising in the form of Google videos.

Thanks JACL! I had nofollowed the link and WordPress conveniently added the red styling for me – I’ve removed it.

I think you’re right. We’re going to see an expansion in advertising types to the end user and a much greater inventory of display advertising for publishers! It’s a great new advertising world thats coming our way!

Google is smart. It is much more cost efficient to buy a company then to make your own.

Google is looking to just expand, and build on their vast amount of products.

    Hi Chris,

I’d be a little more concerned about the little known bonus they picked up as part of the doubleclick deal.

Do you think it’s a conflict of interest for google to own an SEO company?

LOL – Stu, you’re right! Not too many people know about that. I think it’s insane and actually figured they had split that off already – but I guess not.

It so clear, google is slowly taking over the world wide web. They are getting 1 company of each kind and building this companies up.

What does this mean for adsense users? My hunch is lower payouts.

    Google buying Double click?

Like your previous commenter said its a lot cheaper to buy an existing established company than to go and build one up yourself.
With google’s powerful position it make you wonder where its going to end.
