Google Webmaster Tools Launches Robots.txt Generator

posted by Christopher on March 30, 2008

{{chris}} It’s not a major announcement, but it’s interesting. Google has released into Webmaster Tools a free Robots.txt generator.

With all of the developers that Microsoft has, why can’t they simply sit back and write all of the cool tools we webmasters wish we had? Google beat them to the punch again with this simple but convenient tool for generating your robots.txt files.

robots

It’s an important file and getting it wrong can mean losing all of your rankings. Creating it within Google Webmaster tools at least ensures that Google can read your robots.txt – just be sure not to Disallow all spiders :)

Its a nice new too that people need to take advantage of. I see a lot of sites who overlook the benefits you can get from a robots.txt. Especially those who run wordpress.
A robots.txt, really helps deal with duplicate content and junk pages being indexed.

I think it will be useful for those running wordpress, but not free platform blogger. Don’t think can upload to blogger, or, is there a way?

Nice new feature. I haven’t logged into my webmaster tools for probably a week now, but I’ll have to check this out.

Though I haven’t had any problems with robots.txt files I’ve created myself, it’s never a bad thing to have an idiot proof way to create them.

Very cool. It sucks that a lot of quality content is held back by lack of knowledge about search engines, so anything to make it easier on the non-tech sorts is good for everyone (except for shady SEOs).

Really nice, especially for WP users like myself. Making robot.txt file can be somewhat tricky for newbies.

The average website owner/blogger has no clue what a robot.txt file is, let alone how to write one.
I do like that some of their webmaster tools make previously complicated tasks easy for users and they even height awareness of things people didn’t even no they needed.

I do worry about the guy who decides to throw up a website for his business.

Having no understanding of robots.txt, sitemaps, paid links, nofollow etc etc can see his site buried in the SERP’s with virtually no chance of ranking.

Seems there’s very little chance of any success online without enlisting the help of a pro, or doing an awful lot of reading…

Pretty simple tool and pretty useless for the people already knowing the basic stuff. But it follows the trend Google is on lately – to create free tools for webmasters.
