Thanks for this helpful list. May I add one more alternative which I have been using for quite some time already. It is web crm http://www.worketc.com, it isn’t free but cost is very much affordable besides it is an integration of online tools to run small to mid-size businesses — a crm, project management and invoicing/billing too in one platform.

Basecamp is pretty good especially if you’ve been using it for a long time now. It’s not cluttered and has everything you need. It’s pretty helpful if you outsource some of your work. But I think ProjectPier is pretty close.

Another reader has put me onto http://www.comindwork.com which looks like a fantastic project management platform. However the pricing is significantly higher. Small plans start with Free and very quickly ramp up to expensive. It contains some fairly advanced enterprise features so perhaps those are enough to justify the price. Have a look for yourselves!
